Decay replaces bathing spots despite taxes allocated for environmental care.

It had been a while since I last returned to my hometown, a small village in the province of Mantua where I spent my youth. I had a passion for fishing with rods, a hobby passed down to me by my father. In the area, there were two drainage and irrigation canals that used to be highly frequented […].

The current state of these canals, however, painted a different picture. What was once a popular spot for swimming and leisure activities has now succumbed to a state of neglect and decay. It is disheartening to witness the deterioration of an area that was once cherished by both locals and visitors alike.

As I walked along the banks of the canals, memories from my childhood flooded back. I remembered the laughter of children playing in the water, families enjoying picnics on the grassy shores, and the excitement of catching my first fish. It was a place of joy and connection with nature.

Now, however, the scene before me was one of desolation. The water was murky and littered with debris. The once vibrant ecosystem that supported a variety of aquatic life seemed to have vanished. Instead, there were signs of pollution and neglect everywhere.

It is puzzling to comprehend how such a decline could occur. After all, we pay taxes specifically allocated for the maintenance and care of our surroundings. Yet, here I stood, witnessing the disregard for our environment firsthand. It raises questions about the efficiency and effectiveness of the local authorities responsible for ensuring the preservation of our natural resources.

This degradation not only affects the aesthetic appeal of the area but also poses potential health risks. Polluted waters can harbor harmful bacteria and pollutants that can harm both humans and wildlife. It is a matter of public concern that deserves attention and action.

While progress and development are vital for any community, it should not come at the expense of our environment. It is crucial for the responsible authorities to address this issue promptly and take measures to restore the canals to their former glory. This would not only benefit the local community but also attract tourism and promote a sense of pride in our hometown.

As I reluctantly left the canals behind, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of disappointment. The beauty and serenity that once defined this place seemed to have faded away. However, I remain hopeful that through awareness, activism, and collaborative efforts, we can reclaim the care and respect for our natural surroundings that we all deserve.
