Qatari Delegation Strengthens Global Space Data Access with SSA Sharing Agreement

Leadership from the U.S. Army and Space Force, along with representatives from Space Delta 5, the 18th Space Defense Squadron (18 SDS), and the U.S. Embassy, joined forces with a delegation from the Qatari Armed Forces. The gathering took place at the 18 SDS building located in Vandenberg Space Force Base, California on October 31, 2023.

The Qatari delegation, guided by Major General Abdulaziz Al Doseri, an advisor to Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs for Space and Telecommunications, paid a visit to the 18 SDS to enhance their understanding of the Space Domain Awareness network. This initiative demonstrates Qatar’s growing interest and commitment to space-related matters.

The purpose of the visit was to familiarize the Qatari Armed Forces with the operations of the 18 SDS and gain valuable insights into their Space Domain Awareness capabilities. By engaging with the U.S. military and Space Force leadership, Qatar aims to expand its knowledge and strengthen its own space defense initiatives.

Qatar has recently demonstrated its dedication to space safety and security by signing a Space Situational Awareness Agreement with the United States. This agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the two nations in sharing information and enhancing situational awareness in outer space. With this collaboration, Qatar seeks to actively contribute to the global efforts in ensuring the peaceful and sustainable use of space.

The meeting at Vandenberg Space Force Base served as an important milestone in the growing partnership between the United States and Qatar in the realm of space defense. It provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange ideas, learn from each other’s experiences, and foster closer collaboration in space-related endeavors.

As the international community increasingly recognizes the significance of space domain awareness, such interactions and knowledge-sharing initiatives become vital for nations seeking to safeguard their interests in space. Qatar’s proactive approach to establishing partnerships and gaining insights into advanced space defense systems highlights its commitment to staying at the forefront of global developments in this rapidly evolving domain.

The collaboration between the U.S. military and Qatar’s Armed Forces signifies a shared commitment to maintaining the safety, security, and integrity of space activities. Through such partnerships, nations can collectively address the challenges posed by the growing utilization of space for both peaceful and potentially hostile purposes.

In conclusion, the visit of the Qatari Armed Forces delegation to the 18 SDS building at Vandenberg Space Force Base symbolizes a significant step forward in Qatar’s efforts to bolster its space defense capabilities. By engaging with U.S. leadership and fostering closer ties with the international community, Qatar aims to enhance its space domain awareness network and contribute actively to the global pursuit of a secure and sustainable space environment.
