Transparency International, a global non-governmental organization fighting against corruption, has been releasing its Corruption Perceptions Index annually since 1995. This comprehensive assessment ranks countries based on their perceived levels of public sector corruption. The index plays a crucial role in raising awareness about corruption and encouraging governments to take action against it.

During the presentation, Michele Calleri, President of Transparency International Italy, highlighted the importance of tackling corruption at all levels. He emphasized that corruption undermines trust in institutions, hinders economic development, and perpetuates social inequalities. Calleri urged governments and civil society to work together in implementing effective anti-corruption measures.

Iole Anna Savini, Past President and Delegate for Institutional Relations, shared insights into the methodology behind the Corruption Perceptions Index. Savini explained that the index combines data from various sources, including expert assessments and public opinion surveys, to provide an objective evaluation of corruption perceptions worldwide. She stressed the need for robust data collection and analysis to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Francesco Paolo Sisto, Deputy Minister of Justice, addressed the government’s commitment to combating corruption in Italy. He described ongoing efforts to strengthen legal frameworks, improve transparency, and enhance accountability mechanisms. Sisto emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies, judiciary bodies, and civil society organizations to effectively tackle corruption.

Giuseppe Busia, President of the National Anti-Corruption Authority, emphasized the role of his organization in preventing and combating corruption in Italy. He highlighted the importance of promoting a culture of integrity and implementing anti-corruption measures across all sectors. Busia called for increased cooperation and international exchange of best practices to fight corruption on a global scale.

Eugenio Fusco, Deputy Prosecutor of Milan, provided insights into the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in prosecuting corruption cases. He discussed the complex nature of investigating and prosecuting high-level corruption, emphasizing the need for specialized skills and resources. Fusco stressed the importance of judicial independence and the rule of law in effectively addressing corruption.

The release of Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index serves as a call to action for governments, civil society, and individuals around the world. It highlights the urgency of addressing corruption and its detrimental impact on societies. By fostering transparency, accountability, and integrity, countries can work towards a future free from corruption, where trust in institutions is restored, and socio-economic progress can thrive.
